Biography

Rich Mitchell, Professor of Health and Environment, leads the Places and Health Programme at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow.

Following a geography degree and then PhD at the University of Southampton which used neural networks to map neighbourhood characteristics, Rich moved to London for work and training in population health and epidemiology. His journey then took him through various research roles at Bristol, Leeds and Sheffield Universities, eventually brining him to the CSO Research Unit in Health, Behaviour and Change at the University of Edinburgh Medical School where he rose to the position of Associate Director.

In 2007, Rich joined the University of Glasgow as a Reader in Health Inequalities. He was promoted to Professor of Health and Environment in 2009 and led the Public Health group from 2014 to 2017. He then moved to the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit to lead the Places and Health programme.

In 2010, along with colleagues in Edinburgh, Rich also co-founded the Centre for Research on Environment, Society and Health (CRESH), an interdisciplinary centre focused on exploring how physical and social environments impact population health.

Early in his career, Rich concentrated on monitoring and investigating social and geographical health inequalities. Over time however, he became more interested in how health can be protected than in what damages it, and in how social and geographical inequalities in health can be addressed. He developed an extensive research program on the health benefits of urban green spaces and has authored numerous key studies in this area.

Rich is a prominent commentator and contributor to media discussions on environment and health. In 2016, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition by being featured in a National Geographic article, a magazine that sparked his interest in geography.

His research has been cited in over 700 policy documents worldwide, including in the global south. Rich's work on the health impacts of natural environments has significantly influenced policy and practice in Scotland, the UK, and internationally, contributing to the widespread recognition of the positive impacts of nature on population health.

Rich actively communicates and engages with stakeholders and the public. All his current research projects involve collaboration with policymakers, practitioners, and/or the public. Rich has also played various roles in developing partnerships and serving as an 'academic citizen,' including a nine-year tenure on the board of Paths For All, chairing the Research and Evidence Board of Our Natural Health Service, and as Chair of the Data and Evidence subgroup and member of the main Environment and Spaces for Public Health Partnership.

Research interests

Rich is an epidemiologist and geographer whose research delves into the intricate relationship between environments and health inequalities. He leads an MRC-funded research programme on Places and Health, which seeks to answer key questions: How do places evolve? How do they affect health? And how can this knowledge be harnessed to enhance health and narrow health inequalities?

Utilising innovative quantitative methodologies, Rich's team investigates how places integrate into complex systems that shape health outcomes. Their approach includes employing wearable technologies to track children's movements, employing agent-based models to simulate human-environment interactions, and utilising GIS to visualise and comprehend spatial dimensions of population health.

Rich's personal research centres on understanding the impact of changes in natural and urban environments on population health and health inequalities. He is particularly interested in green spaces like urban woodlands and parks, exploring how access to such areas can both foster health and mitigate health inequalities.

Rich is also interested in resilience and positive deviance, examining how individuals and communities adapt to challenging environments and drawing lessons to benefit others. Collaborating with colleagues at CRESH, Rich also investigates the influence of alcohol and tobacco retail environments on population health and disparities.
